Overview

What Are Backing Tracks?

Backing tracks can vary from a simple series of clicks, akin to a metronome, to a full musical arrangement. These audio files typically include a 'click-track' that only the performers can hear, helping them keep time and stay in sync with the digital accompaniment. Additionally, music software can enhance the experience by integrating stage lights control for a more dynamic performance.

How Does It Work?

Generally, PA system amplifiers and speakers operate on a single output channel (mono), while most digital audio devices use stereo (two channels). In this setup, the two channels are divided, with one output track sent to the PA speakers and a click-track directed to the performer’s in-ear monitors, often accompanied by backing tracks managed through music software. Additionally, stage lights control can enhance the overall performance experience.

The Tools You Need

Performing with backing tracks can be challenging at first. You need to master staying in sync with the click-track, leaving little room for flexibility. With the right music software, like Backing Track Workstation, you have the essential tools to keep in sync with the click-track, display lyrics, chords, and other cues, create setlists for quick song selection, and even control stage lights for a complete concert experience.
